Unified Event Response Platform for Insurance Analytics Company

Consolidating multiple SaaS apps to facilitate processes for insurance analysts

Consolidated seven fragmented disaster monitoring applications into a unified platform, securing $100K+ in customer commitments through strategic design prototypes before development began. The redesign dramatically reduced maintenance overhead while establishing the product as the industry's comprehensive geospatial analytics solution.

Role: UX Designer | Timeline: 7 months | Year: 2017

Situation: An insurance technology company maintained seven separate Flash-based applications for different natural disaster types (hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes), creating fragmented workflows and maintenance burdens. Event response analysts struggled to identify relevant events, calculate portfolio exposure, and prioritize field responses across their insured properties.

Task: Redesign the platform to consolidate all hazard types into a modern, unified experience that would improve operational efficiency and win customer investment to fund development.

Action: I led the UX process from research through visual design. Without direct customer access, I facilitated workshops with internal insurance professionals to build personas, empathy maps, and journey maps. I discovered users needed to search for events rather than portfolios—opposite of our initial assumptions. I designed an intelligent filtering system with color-coded severity indicators, created "Top Events" categorization using flexible formulas, and developed multi-event comparison capabilities. I built financial modeling features allowing multiple damage calculations in a single report, and created high-fidelity prototypes for customer validation.

Result: Early prototypes secured $100K+ in customer commitments from existing customers and prospects, funding the entire development before writing a single line of code. The platform consolidated 7 separate applications with distinct codebases, dramatically reducing maintenance overhead and accelerating future iteration timelines. This consolidation established the product as the comprehensive data analysis solution for insurance companies, achieving critical competitive differentiation in the geospatial analytics market. The project demonstrated that strategic design artifacts could directly generate revenue and secure business investment.

Allowing users to preview event footprints, available data providers, and a timeline for event datasets to assess incoming claims
Added a calendar view visually indicating if the provider has event footprint data available on a given date
Importance of events varies between users and lists containing all types of events for a given timeframe would be extensive - created top events and created a formula flexible enough to account for different event characteristics across a variety of hazards
